 CONDUCTOR,  LUDVIK MARIANYCH

CHAIKAPICTURE1PROGRAM

CHAIKA FESTIVAL ENSEMBLE/ORCHESTRA

The Concept

To bring together musicians who have instrumental music knowledge and skills in order to workshop/rehearse, and play Ukrainian folk, popular and/or contemporary music in a string, wind and folk instrument orchestral ensemble.
To do a 3-hour workshop/rehearsal on each of the 3 days of the Festival, July 2, 3 and 4th and do a small public performance. You may attend one day, two days or all three days. There is no cost for the workshops.

The Player
Will be polite and patient in their attitude, and have the ability to work pleasantly and maturely in a group setting.
Must know how to read music.
Must have a good knowledge and command of their instrument with at least 2 or 3 years of experience playing their instrument.
Must provide his/her own instrument (a few larger instrument exceptions may be made.)
Must become acquainted with all parts on their score sheets in order to be able to switch parts or lines if it should become necessary during the process of putting the Orchestra together.
Must rehearse their assigned music parts, to a competent level before appearing at mini-sessions, rehearsal workshops or performances.

The Orchestra Instrumentation
May consist of Ukrainian folk instruments (tsymbaly, sopilka, trembita, bayan, bandura, etc.), string instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass, mandolin), woodwind instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, etc.), brass instruments (trumpet, trombone, baritone, etc.) and a piano, keyboard, accordion, bass, rhythm guitar, percussion section.
The final instrumentation of the Orchestra will be determined only after we are sufficiently aware of the players that are interested and willing to commit to this project.
The string, woodwind and brass sections generally can consist of several players on the same instrument and/or part, however, the rhythm section generally requires one player for each instrument, but exceptions may be made, or playing responsibilities may be shared by two or more people.
If necessary, an informal >audition= of some form may be required to determine general ability of the player, to determine if the player is ready to join in, to determine the assignment of parts and/or to determine some degree of balance within the orchestra.

The Music
Will be three, or more, part ensemble arrangements of Ukrainian folk, popular and/or contemporary themes or songs.
If possible, music parts will be supplied to the player in advance so that the player previews and rehearses the material to the best of his/her ability before being called to auditions, mini-sessions, rehearsals, workshops or performances.

The Contact Person
Is any individual, or organization, from any area of Alberta who believes in the value of this project and is willing to promote this project, to find and provide names and contacts of competent, mature, interested and committed players and basically act as a liaison, between players and the conductor.

                                                                      The Logistics
Call the Festival Office for information and leave your contact telephone number and/or e-mail. You will be contacted!
The conductor contacts players and parents to become acquainted, to gather information, to provide information and to determine instrumentation and parts for that player.
The conductor provides music parts in advance .
The players rehearse, in advance, their parts so that they are able to play their parts by themselves, to the best of their ability, respectably, with ease, without great difficulty.
Mini-sessions, or small group warm-up rehearsals, even with three or four or more players may be called in local areas where several players come from in order to go through the required material, to coach and help the players deal with the given material, as well as to have the conductor become acquainted with the players.
In the event that more players than are required on a particular instrument, especially the rhythm section, apply to be a member of the Orchestra, auditions may have to be held in order to select one player, or, the work load may be shared between two or three players.
Players gather, as a full Orchestra, at the Festival at the given time and place, in order to rehearse and/or to present a public performance.
