Sopilka Ukrainian Dance Junior Ensemble

Sopilka – translated in English is a musical instrument from Ukraine, which is a wooden flute.

The Sopilka School of Ukrainian Dance is currently celebrating their 25th year. The group is proud to end off the year performing in their local area at the Vegreville Pysanka Festival.

This year is a building year for the ensemble. The young, energentic, and dedicated dancers have portrayed the love of dance in every way possible. This group provides the opportunity for dancers from communities in and around Vegreville to come together to promote and preserve the heritage of Ukrainian Dance.

Our artistic director, Paul Olijnyk, has provided knowledge and leadership for our dancers. Within the last 25 years Sopilka has performed in Ukraine, Festival by the Seas, at St. John New Brunswick, Garden State Festival in New Jersey, the House of Ukraine at the San Diego Ukrainian Festival, Disneyland in Los Angeles, California, the Northwest Folk Festival in Seattle, Washington and Canada Days Celebration at Canmore Alberta, Disney World, Orlando Florida and many local performances in Alberta. Last year, Sopilka travelled to Quebec for the 400th Anniversary of Quebec City on Canada Day, which was an experience to remember for our dancers. Once again we would like to thank the Vegreville Pysanka Festival for letting us have the opportunity to perform for you.
