Maksym Serhiyovych Zabutnyy was born in Ternopil, Ukraine where he lived the first part of his life before immigrating to Canada in 2004. Being born to Liana and Serhiy Zabutnyy, both professional Ukrainian dancers with Nadzbruchanka, he grew up in an environment filled with high caliber Ukrainian dance opportunities, practices, and performances. Maksym’s dance journey started in Ternopil at age 7 with a children’s dance studio called Posmishka. At 8-years-old Maksym performed in a gala performance at National Palace of Arts ‘Ukraina’ in Kyiv alongside his parents with Nadzbruchanka. After moving to Canada, Maksym would continue his Ukrainian dance education under his parents at Zabutnyy Dance Company. Alongside Ukrainian dance, Maksym began ballet at Martin School of Dance and would later enroll in jazz, tap, hip hop, acro, and contemporary classes. During his time at Martin School of Dance, he took part in CDTA Jazz and Tap, ADAPT Jazz and Tap, and RAD Ballet exams. At age 15, he received a mark of ‘Distinction’ on the Advanced 1 RAD Ballet exam. In his competitive dance career Maksym got many high mark solo and duo awards, many dance convention scholarships, and dance titles. In 2010, Maksym won the national title of ‘Mr. Teen CanDance North America’ in Orlando, Florida. While attending university for Software Systems Engineering, Maksym shifted his focus and passions to Ukrainian dance and culture. He taught multiple schools in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, adjudicated numerous festivals, and performed with Zabutnyy Dance Company’s ensemble. In 2019, Zabutnyy Dance Company toured Ukraine, performing with professional ensembles, participating in dance festivals, and enjoying Ukrainian culture. Maksym was also thrilled to perform twice at Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival with Zabutnyy Dance Company and is looking forward to another chance of performing at CNUF 2022. Maksym graduated with a degree in Software Systems Engineering at the University of Regina. Currently, he works as a Software Developer focused on Autonomous Agriculture with Raven Industries. To all the festival participants and attendees: “I am blessed to share this weekend filled with Ukrainian dance culture and heritage with you! In such a difficult time for Ukraine we can all work to share, promote, and preserve Ukrainian culture together. Good luck to all the performers and Слава Україні!”
